The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza
This story is set as a sequel to the classic tale of The Little Red Hen. After eating her bread the little red hen decides to make a pizza. She again asks for help from her three friends the cat, the dog and the goose for each step of her recipe and each time they decline. This time, when the pizza is done, she does share it with them. They are all so glad that they offer to help her clean up.
The children were intrigued by the ending of this story. The whole story was the same, the friends didn't help her do anything, but at the end she chose to share. This provoked a change in her grateful friends. We pulled these thoughts back to the qualities of a friend the children identified weeks ago: sharing and helpfulness. Does this mean one precedes the other?
The children decided that helping each other and the teachers was fun. They chose to help make play dough. The play dough became play pizzas. Each child likes something different on their pizza, but in order to have the best pizzas we each had to share a little bit of what we each have.
"Would you like some fish on your pizza?" "Yes please, do you need some salami?" "I have cheese, who needs cheese?" |
As you can imagine, some of our pizza lovers couldn't settle for play dough pizzas. Mini cheese pizza anyone?
Taking turns with the tomato sauce spoon takes a lot of patience! |
The children decided that since Maple group was the only group to make pizzas, they could share their pizza with a friend from Oak or Cedar group when they came out of the oven. That made them red hens, sharing with their friends the cats, dogs and geese.
What kind of little hen are you? |
